Imaginosity's 'Festival of Stories 2012 - A Family Adventure into Children's Literature'
Imaginosity is delighted to once again host its annual Festival of Stories under this year's theme of ' A Family Adventure into Children's Literature'. This 9-day event takes place from October 27th to November 4th 2012 and offers a fantastic line up of literary themed interactive and creative workshops and activities exploring the treasures and pleasures of children's stories, books, poems, drama, music and our very special 'Story-Telling Corner' with a line-up off very special guest story-tellers.
The festival aims to promote the importance of storytelling and reading in families; encouraging the creation of family bonds, security and literacy. The festival will be made up of a wide variety of activities and workshops suitable for all the family. As it's Halloween, there will be a Super Scary Hairy Stories Day on the 31st and we invite all those attending to get dressed up and enjoy the experience.
Saturday October 27th - 'The Story of Me!'
Children's Books Ireland who are the national children's books organisation that aims to engage young people with books; will join us on the opening day of the Festival to host their 'Book Clinic' in celebration of this being the national Children's Book Month. The Book Clinic will be hosted by author and Book Expert David Maybury who will act as the Book Doctor giving advice to parents and children on all things 'books'! Perhaps your child has just finished a series and doesn't know what to read next? Or maybe there's a reluctant young reader in your house? The Book Doctor will be on hand for consultations & giving 'book prescriptions' to take to your local library or bookshop. There will also be activities, arts & crafts to keep little ones busy. Imaginosity is grateful to Children's Books Ireland for their involvement in the Festival of Stories.
Puca Puppets Theatre Company will visit us on Saturday afternoon for their wonderful performance of Storybear. Puca Puppets produces shows for both children and adults in various contexts. Storybear loves stories and he helps puppeteer Niamh Lawlor tell & draw you one too if you promise to help! Storybear is an intimate interactive storytelling session suitable for families. Storybear will take place twice on Saturday afternoon. Both performances are free with general admission to the museum but booking is strongly advised for this not-to-be-missed wonderful performance for all the family.
Our first special guest in our Story Corner will be RTE's Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh who will read a family story in the morning.
Illustration workshops will take place throughout the day where families can explore themselves through creative illustrations!
Sunday October 28th - 'Super Hero Sunday'
'When I grow up' Music & Dance Workshops will take place throughout the morning where children can explore the adventures of 'Matilda', the very famous book by Roald Dahl. Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true and at 5-and-a-half can do things others can only dream of. Come and discover her tricks and secrets through this interesting music and dance workshop.
Award-winning children's author Benji Bennett will read from one of his new book ' Adam's Greatest Inventions' in celebration of Super Hero Sunday as Benji takes us on exciting adventures with his super-hero Adam, as he embarks on another magnificent adventure as he seeks to find history's greatest invention. Along with reading the new book, Benji will be on hand to sign copies of his books to those wishing to purchase from his collection of Adam's World Book. Imaginosity is just delighted to welcome Benji and his family back to Imaginosity for this very special story-telling session. More information on the Adam's Cloud Books.
Monday October 29th - ' Fables & Fairytales Day'
Explore your favourite fairytale characters through creative interactive art & craft workshops; making Snow White & the Seven Toilet Roll Dwarves and your very own Jack and the Beanstalk.
In our Story Corner we have the mighty former Irish professional boxer Bernard Dunne who will read from The Legend of Fionn Mac Cumhail. Imaginosity is grateful to Bernard for his time and delighted that he will be joining us for the Festival.
Paul Costelloe Puppet Room - Theatre Performance: Visit the Paul Costelloe Puppet Room for a very special performance written and performed in celebration of The Festival of Stories.
Tuesday October 30th - ' A Very Big Adventure'
We hope you are set for adventure today, as we explore adventure stories with art workshops where you can make your own 'Aladdin Magic Carpet Coasters' or Treasure Island's 'Message in A Bottle'. Eike Traynor from Purely Yoga will join us for 'Yoga Stories' where imaginations will be (literally) stretched as we embark on magical journeys together.
Wednesday October 31st - 'Spooky Scary Hairy Day!!'
Halloween is always a special day at Imaginosity, and this year will be no exception as we celebrate the spookiest of days with scary hairy events and activities. Children's Author Deirdre Sullivan of The Nightmare Club' series of children's books will join us for Spooky Scary Campfire Stories in the morning. Throughout the day there will be dance workshops where you can learn the Monster Mash and Thriller moves, spot prizes for the Best Fancy Dress Costumes and lots more. The Imaginosity Staff will be joining in the fun in fancy dressed flash mob dances and spoooooooky fun.
Thursday November 1st - ' Irish Myths & Legends Day'
Imaginosity will celebrate Irish stories, myths and legends on Thursday. Puppet Storytime will explore the Gaelic version of An Cochaillin Dearg (Little Red Riding Hood), while later on families can take part in an art story workshop discovering 'The Salmon of Knowledge'. Oscar Wilde's 'The Selfish Giant' will be performed and dramatised in a family theatre workshop to close the day. Irish playwright and author Peter Sheridan will join us for an exciting 'Tell A Story' workshop and enchant us with a story-telling tale too.
Friday November 2nd - ' Sensational Senses Day'
Friday sees a very special, inclusive family day at Imaginosity, as we introduce our charitable partners for the festival. Childvision, the National Education Centre for Blind Children and Deaf Kids Ireland will provide us with a multisensory experience for all ages. Children will explore the importance of our senses; our taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight through interactive workshop elements. Childvision will enable us to discover braille and tactile storytelling, while Deaf Kids Ireland will provide an insight into storytelling for children with hearing issues. We are delighted and excited about our partners visiting Imaginosity and thrilled that this year, there is a strong inclusive aspect to the festival.
Irish Garden Designer and TV Personality Diarmuid Gavin will join us as our special guest in the Story Corner.
Saturday November 3rd - ' Stories from around the World'
Let's take a trip around the world together through stories and poems from the corners of the globe. There will be Haiwaiian Dance Story Workshops and an exploration of global poetry, as we go 'Around the World in 80 Poems'.
The lovely Roisin Ingle, writer and journalist with The Irish Times will join us as our special guest in the Story Corner.
Sunday November 4th - ' Comic Book Creations'
Join us for this funny family day as we explore the fantastic comic book genre of children's literature. Create your own Comic Book Character today or join illustrator and children's author Chris Judge in a 'beastly' illustration workshop for all the family.
Child psychotherapist Joanna Fortune will return to Imaginosity to provide parents with informal guidance on the importance of reading within the family; the value of quality time together and the developments of the benefits of reading a story with or to your child. Joanna is the Founder and Director of 'Solamh', the Child Relationship Clinic in Dublin.
So........take a magical journey with us this Halloween Mid-Term because as Dr Seuss once said: 'The more that you read ,the more things you will learn, and the more that you learn, the more places you will go!" .
All activities and events within the festival are FREE with general admission. Booking is advised as the festival will be busy.
